A little while ago now, MS bought iView. The development went on and they recently released the application under a new name (Expression Media) as part of the Expression suite of software.
I had been wondering for quite a while what had happened with the Mac version of the app. Well, Cheryl Wise recently told me that on her Expression Media CD, was a Mac version with a Mac serial number.
I googled around and it looks like no one really mentioned the release of a Mac version. MS even has a Free Trial version on their site (you need to register through Passport :-\ )

Je me suis demandé pendant un temps ce qu’il était advenu de la version Mac. Et bien Cheryl Wise m’a fait savoir dernièrement que sur son CD de la version Windows, elle avait un installateur pour la version Mac avec son numéro de série. J’ai fait une recherche sur Google et apparemment la sortie de la version Mac est passée relativement inaperçue. MS a même une version d’essai sur son site (nécessite de s’enregistrer par Passport :-\ ).

I mentioned in my previous post what Silverlight could achieve for us Mac users.
Silverlight is the new name of something that came up a few months ago (in beta as well) under the name WPFe.
It looks like the people in charge of this project at MS made a slight mistake with the new change of name :->
The installer doesn’t look for a previous install under the WPFe name and installs itself in addition to the old plug-in. Bad, bad karma.
For people who have installed the old beta, I would suggest deleting /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/WPFe.plugin if they want to install Silverlight.

J’ai mentionné précédemment ce que la technologie Silverlight pourviat faire sur Mac. Silverlight était sorti en bêta il y a quelques mois sous le nom de WPF/e.
On dirait que les personnes en charge du projet chez MS ont commis une bourde avec le changement de nom:->
L’installateur ne vérifie pas si une installationantérieur existe sous l’ancien nom…… Très mauvais karma.
Pour ceux qui ont installé la précédente bêta, je suggère fermement de supprimer /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/WPFe.plugin si ils veulent installer Silverlight.

Cheryl Wise mentioned today that the Mix website had a nice demo of the new MS Silverlight plugin running on a Mac on their site.

The Silverlight beta plug-in has been available for Mac for a little while now.

I haven’t posted here in a little while but the news I found today is – I believe – worth mentioning here.
The last issue of MacWorld mentions an internal memo (PDF) between Bill Gates and the head of the Mac Business Unit in ’97.
From the address where the PDF is hosted, it looks like the memo was released as part of a consumer case in Iowa.
The memo is an reply to Bill Gates who was asking whether MS should keep on working on Office 97 for Mac (released later as Office 98) or just call it quits. Ben Waidman, who was then the head of the MacBU, goes through a lengthy explanation telling Bill Gates why he believes Office for Mac had to be finished and released. It looks like the development of Office for Mac was close to being abandoned back then :-\ Ben Waidman even mentioned “We are creating a good product (perhaps the last one)“.

It appears that things have changed quite a bit since then. Not only was Office 98 released (correcting the awful mistakes of the Word 6 series), but it was followed with 2001, X, 2004 and now 12 or 2008/9 or whatever name the next version will have

Je n’avais pas posté sur ce blog depuis quelques temps, mais je suis tombé sur une nouvelle qu’il me semblait était largement digne d’être rapportée ici.
Le dernier nuµéro d ela version US de MacWorld mentionne un mémo interne (PDF) entre Bill Gates et le patron de la MacBU en ’97.
L’adresse du serveur sur lequel se trouve hébergé le PDF laisse à penser qu’il s’agit d’une pièce à conviction dans un procès de consommateurs en Iowa.
Le mémo est une réponse à Bill Gates qui demandais si MS devait continuer à développer Office 97 pour Mac (distribué plus tard sous le nom d’Office 98) ou tout simplement abandonner le développement de produits pour Mac. Ben Waidman, qui était à l’époque à la tête de la MacBU, entre dans les détails des arguments pour lesquels il pense qu’Office pour Mac 97/98 doit être terminé et distribué (le mémo est en anglais évidemment). On dirait que l’on n’est pas passé bien loin… Un détail révélatuer, Ben Waidman mentionne “We are creating a good product (perhaps the last one)” (nous sommes en train de développer un bon produit – peut-être le dernier).

On dirait que les choses ont bien changé depuis. Office 98 a été distribué (en corrigeant nombre des erreurs profondes de la série Word 6, etc), et il a été suivi de 2001, X, 2004 et maintenant 12 ou 2009/9 ou je-ne-sais-pas-quel-nom-ils-vont-lui-donner

I recently read this interesting article on MacOS Hints: Reset the .Mac Sync Server with Syncrospector
. The article mentions Syncrospector. A VERY handy little application made by Apple to monitor SyncServices under MacOS X 10.4. This utility is perfect for troubleshooting all syncServices problems. You can monitor the state of your syncs, trigger a slow sync, reset services…
For some reason, instead of providing it straight from the regular Apple download sections, the app is hidden with a sample application on the ADC website.
You have to download the StickiesExample application and along comes the wonderful Syncrospector application (free!!!).
There is even a tutorial for Syncrospector on another section of their site.

J’ai récemment lu un article très intéressant sur MacOS X Hints (en anglais) : Reset the .Mac Sync Server with Syncrospector
. L’article fait référence à Synchrospector. C’est une application TRÈS pratique fournie par Apple pour surveiller les SyncServices sous MacOS X 10.4. Cet utilitaire permet de résoudre bien des soucis avec al synchronisation. Vous pouvez suivre l’état de vos synchronisations, forces une synchro lente, remettre à zéro une synchronisation…
Pour une raison que j’ignore, au lieu de fournir ce petit bijoux depuis la section téléchargement de leur site, Apple l’a caché avec une application exemple sur ADC (section pour les développeurs).
On doit télécharger StickiesExample et avec l’application se trouve caché le merveilleux Syncrospector (gratuit!!!).
Il y a même un bref tutoriel (en anglais encore) sur une autre section de leur site.

Messenger 6.0.2 is out it corrects several issues including the “contacts appear offline” bug.
It also offers a hidden possibility to log events in case you need to do some troubleshooting when things go bad.

Announced for Q1 2007, the next release of NeoOffice: NeoOffice 2.1 should Support OpenXML Documents and VBA Macros.
Now this is BIG. They are bringing VBA support when MS announced they are dropping theirs in the next version of Office.
We still need to know what version of VBA will be supported and what he performances will be, but it indicates a strong commitment that could seriously hurt the MacBU in the long term. A lot of people rely on VBA in Excel especially. You can of course stick with the current version of Office that still supports VBA, but in the long term…… And Neo Office is free……..

Neo Office is a MacOS X native port of Open Office (it doesn’t run in X11 like Open Office) and it already is Universal Binary.

This also means that we will soon have a free Office-like application that supports the new Win:Office 2007 OpenXML format.

C’est un nouvelle de grande importance. Ils apportent le support VBA quand MS a annoncé le retirer d’Office 2008,
On ne sait pas encore quelle version de VBA sera offerte ni quelles seront les performances, mais c’est un engagement fort qui peut faire du mal à la MacBU à terme. Beaucoup de gens utilisent intensément le VBA, surtout dans Excel. Vous avez bien sûr la possiblité de rester avec Office 2004 qui le supporte déjà, mais sur el long terme….. et Neo Office est gratuit……..

Neo Office est une adaptation native pour MacOS X d’Open Office (pas besoin de faire tourner dans X11 comme Open Office) et il est déjà Universal Binary.

Cela veut aussi dire que nous aurons bientôt une application type Office, gratuite et qui supporte les nouveaux formats OpenXML d’Office 2007 pour Windows.

I found a new software today: ASFRecorderX.

This app describes itself as a Streaming Capture Software for .asf and mms:// links.
That looks like a pretty good app and it is freeware. Unfortunately, it is Intel only. PPC Mac can’t run it.

Cette application se décrit elle-même comme une application de capture de flux .asf et mms://. Ça a l’air pas mal du tout et en plus elle est gratuite. Malheureusement elle est Intel uniquement et ne tourne pas sur les Mac PPC.

The MS website has a new press release aboutOffice 2008 for Mac.

I personnally find the press release itself rather dry and uninteresting. You can actually find a LOT more things on a recent MacFixIt article.

• compatibility with the new file formats from Win:Office 2007
• Office Art 2 (new graphic layer inherited from Win:Office 2007)

le site de MS vient de mettre en ligne une annonce de presse sur Office 2008 pour Mac.
L’annonce est en anglais mais on l’aura sans aucun doute sur le site français dès que MS France se charge de le mettre à jour (dans un an ou deux?? :-> )

Je trouve que leur annonce est assez sèche et peu descriptive. On trouve en fait beaucoup plus d’informations sur le site de MacFixIt (en anglais).

Une petite liste de nouveautés pour ceux qui ne comprennent pas l’anglais :

• pas de ruban (à la Office 2007 pour WIndows) On aura à la place une “gallerie d’éléments”

The Office 11.3.3 update just came out on the MS site

This update contains several improvements to enhance security and stability, including fixes for vulnerabilities that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of your computer’s memory with malicious code. In addition, this update includes all of the improvements released in all previous Office 2004 updates.

57.6MB and the page has it available in multiple languages.

La mise à jour d’Office 11.3.3 vient de sortir sur le site de MS

Cette mise à jour contient divers éléments conçus pour améliorer la sécurité et la fiabilité du produit, y compris des correctifs pour diverses failles pouvant permettre à une personne mal intentionnée d’écraser le contenu de la mémoire de votre ordinateur à l’aide d’un code malveillant. Cette mise à jour inclut également toutes les améliorations de toutes les mises à jour Office 2004 précédentes.

58,7Mo en français mais la mise à jour est disponible pour différentes langues sur cette page.

MS just released a new version of their Mouse and Keyboard drivers.
I’m not quite sure what’s new. I would guess that there are a few bug corrections. I installed them myself and so far nothing bad happened

Now I wish they could finally release a Bluetooth driver. Their Bluetooth mice work fine on my Mac, but with no driver to configure the buttons :-\

MS vient juste de mettre en ligne une nouvelle version de leurs pilotes pour souris et clavier.
Je ne suis pas certain de savoir ce qu’il y a de nouveau, mais je les ai installé sur mon Mac sans problème apparent. Sans doute des corrections de bug divers.

Si seulement ils pouvaient aussi fournir des pilotes Bluetooth au passage…….. Leurs souris Bluetooth marchent bien sur mon Mac, mais sans pilote, impossible de configurer les boutons comme on veut :-\

The Public Preview of Papers came out today.
This new shareware by Mekentosj helps you track search and organize scientific publications, import the PDFs, etc. The new UI basically does everything I ever wished EndNote would do.
The current public preview version is not yet feature complete. The final release will be able to import EndNote libraries for instance. All that for $25!!!!! (check out the price of EndNote online :-> ).
There are other apps with more or less the same purpose out there, but give the app a 5 minute test run and you’ll understand why I’m so exited

Now I wish I could also use it in Word to insert and format my references the way I can do it with EndNote…..

La version de démonstration publique de Papers est sortie aujourd’hui.
Ce nouveau shareware par Mekentosj permet d’effectuer des recherches d’articles scientifiques, de les organiser, d’importer les PDF, etc. L’interface utilisateur propose tout ce que j’aurais aimé voir dans EndNote depuis toujours.
La version disponible actuellement n’a pas encore toutes les fonctions prévues dans la version finale. Celle-ci proposera par exemple d’importer vos bibliothèques EndNote. Et tout ça pour $25!!! (comparez au prix d’EndNote :-> ).
Il existe d’autres applications qui suivent plus ou moins le même chemin, mais essayez-celle-ci 5 minutes et vous comprendrez pourquoi je suis si enthousiaste

Si seulement je pouvais l’utiliser pour insérer mes références dans Word et formater les manuscrits comme avec EndNote…….

I noticed a new version 1.1 of Docx Converter.
This notification was on the Dashboard section of the Apple site. It looks like the new version has a widget for converting Word 2007 XML files to Word 2004 format.

Yesterday, France launched its 24h/day ninternational news channel: France 24
The site offers a video feed in English live.france24.com/fr… and French live.france24.com/fr…
If you want to bypass the main page and bookmark the video feeds, you can copy them here and use them in WMP9 or QuickTime Player (command-D to add to bookmarks) providing you have the Flip4Mac WMV codecs.
For people like me, it provides an interesting alternative to the all-US news channel (dare I mention Fox News??) for international news. I wish BBC Wolrd News had live streaming but I failed to find any on their site :-\
So far, France 24 has been a rather nice surprise. Much better than some of the news we get in France too actually,

Pour les gens comme moi, ça propose une alternative intéressante aux chaînes tout-US (Fox News ?? :-> )pour avoir des nouvelles internationales. J’aurais aimé que BBC World News ait un flux vidéo en direct comme France 24, mais je n’en ai pas trouvé sur leur site :-\
Jusque là, ça a été une plutôt agréable surprise. Bien mieux que les nouvelles sur la plupart des chaînes en France en fait…

Synching with Exchange in Entourage has a serious limitation: it doesn’t sync categories:
1) you can’t sync the categories to another computer
2) if you rebuild your database, all the data (that doesn’t have any information about categories) is redownloaded from the server and all the categories are lost.

A while ago I wrote a simple script to save categories names for contacts to one of the custom fields. Barry Wainwright posted on his site a much improved version for calendar events.

I took Barry’s code and adapted it for both calendar events and contacts and for all accounts on the Mac.
The scripts haven’t had much testing (I use them and everything has been fine so far), but it wouldn’t hurt to back up your calendar and events before doing anything :->

Barry uses the Creative Commons licence for his script and that’s more than OK with me. The new ones are therefore distributed under the exact same license.

Here are the scripts. Make sure you place them in the Entourage Scripts folder in your Microsoft User Data folder and use at your own risks

A first set of scripts will save category names in the notes. A second set will read the notes and use the information found there to restore the categories.
It’s pretty straightforward. You can also edit the scripts to take a look at the code.
There is another advantage. Entourage 2004 can sync it’s address book to the system address book (AB) if you are running Tiger.
Notes will sync to the AB through SyncServices. You can use the script to save the category names in the Notes and perform a simple search in the AB to find all the contacts of a category. You can then drag the contacts to the group you want in the AB. It’s a little basic, but it allows you to get all the categories back in the AB.

La synchronisation avec Exchange par Entourage souffre de sérieuses limitations : on ne peut synchroniser les catégories avec le serveur. Par conséquent :
1) on ne peut synchroniser les catégories avec un autre ordi
2) si on reconstruit la base d’Entourage, ça force l’application à retélécharger tous les contacts avec le serveur. Celui-ci n’ayant pas les catégories, elles sont perdues.

Il y a un certain temps, j’avais fait un simple script pour enregistrer les informations des catégories dans le champ perso 8 des contacts (pour pouvoir les restaurer plus tard). Barry Wainwright a mis en ligne sur son site une version très améliorée pour les entrées du calendrier.

J’ai repris le code de Barry et l’ai adapté pour calendrier et carnet d’adresse pour tous les comptes d’Entourage.
Les scripts n’ont pas été beaucoup testés (je les utilise et tout va bien pour moi pour l’instant), mais ça ne pourrait pas nuire de faire une sauvegarde du carnet d’adresse et calendrier avant de les lancer :->

Les scripts de Barry sont sous licence Creative Commons , ce qui me convient tout à fait. Les nouveaux scripts sont donc également distribués sous la même licence.

Voici les scripts. Placez-les dans le dossier des scripts d’Entourage dans le dossier Données Utilisateur Microsoft. Utilisez-les à vos risques et périls

Un premier ensemble de scripts copie le nom des catégories dans le champ note et un second ensemble lit le champ note pour restaurer les catégories si besoin est. Assez simple d’utilisation.
Vous pouvez-bien entendu éditer le code des scripts pour y jeter un coup d’oeil.
Un autre avantage: le champ note se synchronise avec le carnet d’adresse système (pas SyncService si vous avez activé l’option dans Entourage 2004) sous Tiger. Grâce à ces scripts, vous pouvez transmettre, par les notes, le nom des catégories au carnet d’adresse système et utiliser un simple recherche pour trouver tous les contacts d’une catégorie et les glisser dans le groupe voulu dans le carnet d’adresse. Rudimentaire, mais ça permet de retrouver les catégories dans le carnet d’adresse système.
