{"id":133,"date":"2007-04-11T09:58:41","date_gmt":"2007-04-11T15:58:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cortig.net\/wordpress\/?p=133"},"modified":"2007-04-11T09:58:45","modified_gmt":"2007-04-11T15:58:45","slug":"life-or-death-for-office-98-mort-ou-vie-doffice-98","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cortig.net\/wordpress\/2007\/04\/11\/life-or-death-for-office-98-mort-ou-vie-doffice-98\/","title":{"rendered":"Life or death for Office 98 &#8211; Mort ou vie d&#8217;Office 98"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>   I haven&#8217;t posted here in a little while but the news I found today is &#8211; I believe &#8211; worth mentioning here.<br \/>\n   The last issue of MacWorld mentions an <a href=\"http:\/\/edge-op.org\/iowa\/www.iowaconsumercase.org\/122106\/PLEX0_6060.pdf\" target=\"_top\">internal memo (PDF)<\/a> between Bill Gates and the head of the Mac Business Unit in &#8217;97.<br \/>\n   From the address where the PDF is hosted, it looks like the memo was released as part of a consumer case in Iowa.<br \/>\n   The memo is an reply to Bill Gates who was asking whether MS should keep on working on Office 97 for Mac (released later as Office 98) or just call it quits.  Ben Waidman, who was then the head of the MacBU, goes through a lengthy explanation telling Bill Gates why he believes Office for Mac had to be finished and released. It looks like the development of Office for Mac was close to being abandoned back then :-\\ Ben Waidman even mentioned &#8220;<i>We are creating a good product (perhaps the last one)<\/i>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>   It appears that things have changed quite a bit since then. Not only was Office 98 released (correcting the awful mistakes of the Word 6 series), but it was followed with 2001, X, 2004 and now 12 or 2008\/9 or whatever name the next version will have \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<hr align=\"center\" \/>\n<p>   Je n&#8217;avais pas post&eacute; sur ce blog depuis quelques temps, mais je suis tomb&eacute; sur une nouvelle qu&#8217;il me semblait &eacute;tait largement digne d&#8217;&ecirc;tre rapport&eacute;e ici.<br \/>\n   Le dernier nu&micro;&eacute;ro d ela version US de MacWorld mentionne un <a href=\"http:\/\/edge-op.org\/iowa\/www.iowaconsumercase.org\/122106\/PLEX0_6060.pdf\" target=\"_top\">m&eacute;mo interne (PDF)<\/a> entre Bill Gates et le patron de la MacBU en &#8217;97.<br \/>\n   L&#8217;adresse du serveur sur lequel se trouve h&eacute;berg&eacute; le PDF laisse &agrave; penser qu&#8217;il s&#8217;agit d&#8217;une pi&egrave;ce &agrave; conviction dans un proc&egrave;s de consommateurs en Iowa.<br \/>\n   Le m&eacute;mo est une r&eacute;ponse &agrave; Bill Gates qui demandais si MS devait continuer &agrave; d&eacute;velopper Office 97 pour Mac (distribu&eacute; plus tard sous le nom d&#8217;Office 98) ou tout simplement abandonner le d&eacute;veloppement de produits pour Mac.
